Rooftop blaze Rooftop blaze

Sometimes in the midst of our busy lives, going back to the basics is the best way to ensure we are doing something to the best of our ability. Whether it's simplifying our meals to get healthy food on the table with

less fuss, or saying no to some of the extra activities after school in order to keep our schedule more manageable—getting back to the basics can help us be the best versions of ourselves.

This should include getting back to the basics of ensuring your home is fire-safe. You might know that you are supposed to check your smoke detectors monthly, but when was the last time you actually did it? Do you have enough smoke detectors? What is your fire safety plan, and does your entire family know what to do in the event of an emergency?

Let’s get back to basics and make our homes as safe as possible.

Fire Safety Equipment

The best place to start when it comes to making sure our homes are safe from fires is with our equipment. Putting the right equipment in the right place—and knowing how to use it or respond to it—can save your life.

You should have a smoke detector on every level of your home and outside of every sleeping space. These should be tested once a month. It is ideal to check them while your family members are home so that everyone knows exactly what they sound like. If you have a fireplace in your home, make sure there is a smoke detector and a carbon monoxide close by.

Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen to quickly extinguish fires if they should spark. Teach several members of your family how to use it, and check it periodically to ensure it isn’t expired.

Get to know how to handle other potential risks in your kitchen—it is one of the top spots where house fires start. Keep pot lids close at hand when you cook to smother grease fires, and never open the oven door when a fire has started inside. Turn the oven off and let the fire go out on its own.

Make a Plan

While having plenty of safety equipment in your home can make a huge difference in keeping your family safe, without a plan, you can still end up dealing with a disaster if a fire does strike.

Your whole family needs to know how to respond if an event does occur. Spend some time talking through escape routes and individual responsibilities.

Draw a chart of your home and lay out the fastest route out of your home from each area. Make it a game to keep things light with your children and time them to see who can get to a pre chosen spot outside the fastest.

Assign older family members the task of ensuring younger children or pets can safely get out of the house. Teach your kids how to call 911, and make sure they know basic information like first and last names and address descriptions.

Practice your safety plan regularly. Put it on your calendar so you never miss a month, and combine it with checking your smoke detectors so that they always have fresh batteries. Let neighbors or extended family members know where your meeting spot is and other emergency plans so that they can check in on you if you can’t otherwise communicate.

Take your fire safety back to the basics to keep your home protected. With the right equipment in the right places and a well-rehearsed plan, you can rest assured that you have done everything you could to prevent a disaster.

What's Next When you have a Fire?

Fire can pose a danger to even the most sturdy of structures. High temperatures from an in home blaze can warp almost all building materials, leaving only rubble and ash in its wake. It is important to keep your most valuable items in your home or business in a fire safe location. Birth Certificates, Social Security cards and any other important documentation should be kept in a fire resistant safe if being stored on your property, or consider having these items placed in a bank's safety deposit box. Fire can erupt and spread within minutes, destroying an entire structure and all its contents. Never return to your home if a fire is present, no physical items that remain in the flames are worth risking your life to rescue. When facing fire damages, give SERVPRO a call. Dryer Fire

8/25/2022 (Permalink)

Clogged vents, ducts, and filters are the primary causes of dryer fires. Usually, this is a result of a buildup of lint, but can certainly be caused by an accumulation of dirt, grass, or anything else that remains after the washing process.

In addition to the lint filter, the outside vent can also become clogged, which prevents airflow and potentially leads to hazardous conditions. Again, this could be a result of lint making its way through the duct and collecting on the screen. However, it can also become obstructed by pesky birds, insect nests, or rodent nests.

How to prevent dryer fires:

1. Make sure it's properly installed

2. Clean lint screen after each use

3. Clean the vent and duct

4. Replace ducts

5. Have your dryer routinely inspected

6. Make sure you are using your dryer correctly

Wildfires

6/20/2022 (Permalink)

Wisconsin is most known as “America’s Dairyland” and is particularly famous for its beer and cheese. One of the scarier things that can occur in Wisconsin are wildfires. As far back as the late1700s, large fires – Not particularly hot or destructive, but spacious ones- moved across Wisconsin every few years.  Some of the more notable ones were German Road, Cottonville, Crystal Lake and the most largest known one in Wisconsin the Peshtigo Fire.

Sometimes these fires make their way into suburban areas. Houses are burned to the ground, businesses are scorched and production comes to a halt, and (worst of all) lives are put on hold or sometimes lost altogether.

Fire damage is easily the worst type of loss a person can endure. Water may leave marks, mold requires cutting walls, but fire can destroy property entirely. When this happens, more than just belongings are lost. Memories, time, and a sense of safety also go up in flames.
If your home or business is affected by a fire, give SERVPRO of Racine County a call. With our experience and attention to detail, we can help ease the pain that comes from a fire. We carefully inventory your belongings to assist insurance companies, we haul away wreckage, and we deodorize and reconstruct homes and businesses.

While it may be a long time before things get back to normal, rest assured: If SERVPRO is on the job, you are in good hands.

Kitchen - One of the Most Common Places for a Fire

4/6/2022 (Permalink)

The heart of the home, kitchens are also the most common spot in the house for fires to start.2 Specifically, unattended cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires and fire-related injuries.3

These man-made fires are also easily preventable: Keep an eye on the stove, oven, and other appliances like toaster ovens, and move combustible items away from the stove. Never leave the kitchen when you’re working with high heat during preparations like frying, boiling, or broiling—fires need only seconds to go from a small flame to an out-of-control blaze.

A few more tips for safe cooking:

  • If someone else can’t watch things while you step away for a bathroom break or to help the kids, turn off the cooking appliance while you’re in the other room.
  • Turn off the stove and all appliances once you’re done cooking.
  • Keep everything off hot surfaces. Pay close attention to where you set dish towels or hot pads. Designate a spot, like a hook, to practice putting them back between each use.
  • Roll up baggy sleeves or wear a securely fastened apron over billowy shirts or bottoms to prevent singeing.
  • Do not heat your home with your oven.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher handy in case of fire. Water will only spread oil or grease and feed the flames.

Fire Extinguisher Safety!

8/25/2021 (Permalink)

Proper use of fire extinguishers can prevent a fire from destroying lives.

Owning a fire extinguisher is not enough, although many people think that is all they need.  The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) requires that employers train their employees how and when to use fire extinguishers. They must provide the training shortly after the employee is hired, and then every year thereafter. If you haven’t been trained yet, please get with your boss and let them know. You do NOT want to skip this training!

OSHA does not allow untrained employees to use a fire extinguisher.

OSHA also requires monthly inspections of the fire extinguishers.

Fire extinguishers have to be placed where they cannot be moved or damaged..

The carrying handle should be 3 ½ - 5 feet above the floor.

Employees must know when to use fire extinguishers.

We at SERVPRO of Racine County suggest asking yourself these questions regarding fire extinguishers.

  • Have I pulled the fire alarm?
  • Is the fire extinguisher easy to reach?
  • Do I know how to use it?
  • Is the fire contained in a small area?
  • Is the smoke non-toxic?
  • Can everyone get out?
  • Do I have an escape route?

If you can answer “yes” to all of the questions, it is reasonable to use the fire extinguisher.

Remember that fire is fast. If you cannot contain it within 30 seconds, get everyone out of the area. Call 9-1-1 once you are outside.

A closed door acts as a shield between you and the damage raging outside. It also allows you time to formulate an escape plan, or if trapped, for rescue efforts to reach your location. A basic house fire can reach upwards of 1,100 degrees but by having your door remain closed prevents the atmospheric temperate of rising above 110 degrees. Hot, but survivable. Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Racine Home

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Racine will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
